More Information About Dual Enrollment

WHAT IS IT?

The Jumpstart to College Dual Enrollment Program allows MCPS college-ready high school students to take college courses during the academic year. Starting with the 2023-2024 school year, JumpStart will be free to MCPS students. Students can take college courses during the fall and spring of their junior and/or senior years. All college courses on the MCPS-approved list will receive dual credit by counting toward college and high school. The classes will appear on the high school transcript unless a student refuses dual credit during enrollment.

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT?

Dual Enrollment programs enable students to:

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

There are some specific requirements associated with the JumpStart Dual Enrollment program. Students may apply if they have done the following:

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The program is free beginning with the 2023-2024 school year. Summer classes are accessible to Dual Enrollment students at the regular college cost of approximately $532 for a three-credit course.

HOW DO I PLACE INTO MC CLASSES?

Most classes at MC require a demonstration of basic college skill levels. There are many ways to meet these requirements:

WHERE ARE CLASSES HELD?

Classes are offered in person at all three MC campuses. MC offers a Remote Learning option for some classes. These classes meet online at specified days and times. MC also offers a fully asynchronous option for some classes. The professor uploads all materials and deadlines on the first day of the course, and students are responsible for keeping up with the work and deadlines. Some classes are offered in a hybrid/blended format which combines in-person and online instruction.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

Credits earned through the dual enrollment program may transfer to public universities in Maryland. If you plan to attend an out-of-state university, you should call the university of interest and inquire about transferring credits. Similar to AP scores, some universities take them, and some do not.

Transportation is not provided; however, Dual Enrollment students may use the RideOn bus and the MC inter-campus bus service for free.

Dual Enrollment & NCAA

Dual Enrollment coursework may be used to satisfy NCAA core course requirements if the courses appear on the student’s high school transcript with grade and credit and meet all requirements for an NCAA-approved core course. College courses must be placed on the student’s high school transcript with a designation that the course was completed through a two- or four-year college. Courses completed at a college should not be submitted for your high school’s list of NCAA courses. However, Dual Enrollment courses that meet core course requirements and are taught by your high school instructors should be submitted for inclusion on your school’s core course list.
